The Assassination of William Greer

by DALE K. MYERS

In today’s Tyrone Times of Northern Ireland, writer Mark Rainey asks “Did Stewartstown native kill JFK?”

Rainey’s rhetorical question refers to William Robert Greer, a farmer's son from Stewartstown in County Tyrone, who immigrated to America in 1929, and who has (thanks to the Internet) become the subject of the most ridiculous conspiracy theory on either side of the Atlantic.

Greer, who joined the U.S. Secret Service in 1945 having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, became a personal bodyguard to both Presidents Truman and Eisenhower before becoming the ill-fated driver of President Kennedy’s limousine in Dallas on November 22, 1963.

Rainey’s article offers nothing of real substance about Greer or his drive through Dallas other than to perpetuate the Internet myth that Greer might have blown Kennedy’s head off when “others” failed to do the job. Yea, sure.

According to Rainey, an army of amateur sleuths have picked up the torch originally carried by William Cooper, who proposed in his 1991 tome Behold a Pale Horse that Greer looked back at Kennedy twice immediately after the shooting began - the first glance supposedly establishing the likelihood of the President surviving the attack, and the second allegedly to initiate 'plan B' where Greer himself was to brazenly finish the job while all eyes were on Kennedy.

Lifting most of his “facts” from the Internet’s Wikipedia Encyclopedia (apparently, Wiki has become the tool of choice for wannabe journalists everywhere), Rainey reports that the wealth of “evidence” offered by conspiracy theorists to substantiate the charges against Greer include: Zapruder film frames that seem to show Greer pointing a gun at Kennedy at the moment of the head shot, Greer's Protestant upbringing (which allegedly supports theories of anti-Catholic sentiments influencing Kennedy’s assassins), a report that Jacqueline Kennedy was bitterly critical of Greer's slow reaction at the time of the shooting, and TV footage which supposedly shows Greer ordering the ambulance crew at Andrews Air Force Base from their vehicle and then driving the President's body to the autopsy (which, conspiracy theorists contend, is further evidence of Greer and his fellow conspirators’ need to keep others from seeing Kennedy’s body).

Rainey writes, “Greer's actions, and his alleged part in a right-wing conspiracy within the CIA against Kennedy, have been analyzed time and again in books such as, The Death of a President, Crime of the Century, and Deadly Alliance, but no definitive conclusions have been reached.” [emphasis added]

Huh?

This is the kind of nonsense that is designed to perpetuate myths, sell newspapers, and drive readers to Internet websites - not to illuminate our understanding of history or to solve crimes.

Nowhere in this article does Mr. Rainey even hint that William Cooper’s initial allegation was bunk to begin with. As reported in my July 2007 entry “Definitive Proof? The Secret Service Killed JFK,” William “Wild Bill” Cooper, the UFO conspiracist, tax resister, and self-styled "militiaman" based his 1991 claimed that JFK was assassinated by limousine driver William Greer, on a special "washed out" version of the Zapruder film — an allegation easily refuted by simply looking at the original Z-film which clearly shows that Greer doesn't have a gun in either hand. Clear copies of the Zapruder film are abundantly available on Internet streaming video sites. All one has to do to debunk Cooper’s fantasy is click a button. How hard can it be?

Cooper, the originator of the charges against Greer, was shot and killed during a shoot out with Apache County, Arizona, sheriff’s deputies in November, 2001, when they attempted to serve Cooper with an arrest warrant at his residence.

The report of Jacequeline Kennedy’s bitterness toward Greer comes from the 1969 best-seller My Life With Jacqueline Kennedy, by Mary Gallagher, secretary to Mrs. Kennedy. Gallagher wrote, “She mentioned one Secret Service man who had not acted during the crucial moment, and said bitterly to me, ‘He might just as well have been Miss Shaw!’,” a reference to the Kennedy children’s nanny. It was later confirmed that the unnamed agent was Greer.

This is in sharp contrast to Mrs. Kennedy’s reaction to Greer on the day of the assassination. Author William Manchester reported in Death of a President, without citation, that at Parkland Hospital, “Those who had been in the motorcade were racking their brains with if only this, if only that. One of them came to her [Jackie Kennedy]. Bill Greer, his face streaked with tears, took her head between his hands and squeezed until she thought he was going to squeeze her skull flat. He cried, ‘Oh, Mrs. Kennedy, oh my God, oh my God. I didn’t mean to do it. I didn’t hear, I should have swerved the car, I couldn’t help it. Oh, Mrs. Kennedy, as soon as I saw it I swerved. If only I’d seen in time! Oh!’ Then he released her head and put his arms around her and wept on her shoulder.” [Death of a President, p.290]

In fact, Mrs. Kennedy felt so sorry for Greer that she requested that he drive the naval ambulance containing the casket to the naval hospital. [O’Donnell and Powers with McCarthy, Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye, p.44]

So much for the conspiracy claim that Greer shooed the real ambulance driver’s away so that he could grab possession of the president’s body as part of the big coverup.

Much like Secret Service agent Clint Hill’s deeply troubled and guilt filled “what-if” self-examination (so vividly portrayed in a 1975 interview with Mike Wallace on CBS television’s 60 Minutes), Greer’s own self doubts must have been understandably overwhelming in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

Greer eventually came to accept what happened in Dallas (and to him, as the limousine’s driver) as the hand of fate. His son told researcher Vince Palamara, “My father certainly didn't blame himself; it's not one of those things - if only I was driving one mile per hour faster. My father had absolutely no survivor's guilt...he figured that events were kind out of their control...it was pretty common knowledge that a person riding in an open car was subject to a bullet at any time...”

Greer, who retired on disability from the Secret Service in 1966 due to a stomach ulcer that grew worse following the Kennedy assassination, died in 1985.

One last question remains: Would it have mattered, as conspiracy theorists argue, if Greer hadn’t slowed the limousine during the five seconds between the second and third shots, and instead accelerated the limousine carrying the president out of harms way? Could Greer have saved Kennedy? Was he truly partly responsible for Kennedy’s death?

In his book, Reclaiming History, author Vincent Bugliosi reasonably argues that Greer’s slowing of the limousine did not substantially alter what happened in Dallas, “Since even before slowing, the limousine was only traveling around eleven miles per hour on a straight line with the barrel of the rifle and on a declining road. Kennedy, as [Monty] Lutz [a member of the HSCA Firearms Panel] said, was already essentially a stationary target, and the limousine merely slowing down further to seven or eight miles an hour probably didn’t give Oswald, in the sniper’s nest, too much more of a break than he already had.” [Reclaiming History, p.315 Endnotes]

While it is quite apparent that the answer to writer Mark Rainey’s rhetorical question, “Did Stewartstown native kill JFK?” is a resounding no, there seems to be no end to mindless speculation about Greer’s role in Kennedy’s death.

Mr. Rainey concludes, “He could have been just another of the countless anonymous exiles from these shores over the centuries, but thanks to the hand of fate and the power of the Internet, the William Greer story looks set to run and run.”

One might also conclude that the kind of tabloid-style journalism apparent in this Tyrone Times article only serves to further empower the Internet kooks bent on assassinating the character of former U.S. Secret Service agent and navy veteran William R. Greer.

  1. It's not crystal clear, but the stabilized Zapruder Film does indeed show Greer turn a second time and remove his left hand from the steering wheel. Just as Kennedy's head explodes, you see Greer's hand jump as if from the recoil of a handgun. But don't take anyone's word for it, study the film yourself. Greer lied in his testimony to the Warren Comission and the Zapruder film is usually shown with his actions cropped out. Read any conspiracy-related forum and you'll find a number of folks who get downright nasty when you promote the understanding of this theory. Political assassination is an art form perfected by the CIA. The idea that the US Secret Service would carry out the plan to assassinate JFK is the opposite of what the public would expect, which makes it the ideal scenario in a coup detat situation.

  2. Witnesses state that the limousine, driven by William Greer came to a halt. It did not merely slow down. The inaction of both Secret Service Agents, as Mrs. Kennedy pointed out, was tantamount to treason. It was their job to protect their president - - to take a bullet if they needed to. They were not "potted plants" nor were they housekeepers as Mrs. Kennedy alluded to. They were United States Secret Service Agents for Christs sake in the very car where the POTUS was. They had NO other purpose being there.

There is no excuse for what they did. They were either incredible stupid, which they were NOT.

Or, they were ordered not to protect the President and allow him to be killed.

That is what happened in Kennedy's car and all around him. His men abandoned him on orders from above.

  3. A friend of mine from the Brazilian equivalent of the U.S. Secret Service told me the same story 25 years ago, and I refused to believe the possibility, until recently.

So, I suggest that one ask why the TWO Serect Service Officers who ALWAYS rode the back bumper of the President's limo were just not there.

The reason is that the two officers were inexplicably FLAGGED OFF THE LIMO at the beginning of the motorcade.

Both physically and verbally protested but to no avail.

Look around and you will find the footage.

  4. On the 22nd November, 1963, Greer was assigned to drive the presidential car in the motorcade through Dallas. Several witnesses said that Greer stopped the car after the first shot was fired. This included Jean Hill, who was the closest witness to the car when Kennedy was hot: According to Hill "the motorcade came to almost a halt at the time the shots rang out". James Chaney (one of the four Presidential motorcyclists) - stated that the limousine "after the shooting, from the time the first shot rang out, the car stopped completely, pulled to the left and stopped." Mary Woodward, a journalist with the Dallas Morning News wrote: "Instead of speeding up the car, the car came to a halt... after the first shot".

Kenneth O'Donnell (special assistant to Kennedy), who was riding in the motorcade, later wrote: "If the Secret Service men in the front had reacted quicker to the first two shots at the President's car, if the driver had stepped on the gas before instead of after the fatal third shot was fired, would President Kennedy be alive today? He added "Greer had been remorseful all day, feeling that he could have saved President Kennedy's life by swerving the car or speeding suddenly after the first shots."

William Manchester claims that Greer told Jackie Kennedy at Parkland Hospital: "Oh, Mrs. Kennedy, oh my God, oh my God. I didn't mean to do it, I didn't hear, I should have swerved the car, I couldn't help it. Oh, Mrs. Kennedy, as soon as I saw it I swerved. If only I'd seen it in time!"

Senator Ralph Yarborough, who was riding with Lyndon B. Johnson, was highly critical of the actions of Greer: "When the noise of the shot was heard, the motorcade slowed to what seemed to me a complete stop... After the third shot was fired, but only after the third shot was fired, the cavalcade speeded up, gained speed rapidly, and roared away to the Parkland Hospital... The cars all stopped... 'I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but for the protection of future Presidents, they (the Secret Service) should be trained to take off when a shot is fired."

It has been estimated that 59 witnesses and the Zapruder Film indicated that Greer stopped after the first shot was fired. However, when interviewed by the Warren Commission, Greer claimed: "I heard this noise. And I thought that is what it was. And then I heard it again. And I glanced over my shoulder. And I saw Governor Connally like he was starting to fall. Then I realized there was something wrong. I tramped on the accelerator, and at the same time Mr. Kellerman said to me, "Get out of here fast." And I cannot remember even the other shots or noises that was. I cannot quite remember any more. I did not see anything happen behind me any more, because I was occupied with getting away."

Greer also testified that he heard three shots and they all came from behind him. His testimony on Kennedy's head wound did suggest that a conspiracy had taken place. He claimed that when he got to Parkland Hospital he noticed Kennedy's "head was all shot, this whole part was all a matter of blood... it looked like that (his head) was all blown off." This contradicts the pictures of Kennedy's head that were published sometime after his death.

There is evidence that Greer also believed that John F. Kennedy had been a victim of a conspiracy. The daughter of Roy Kellerman, the Secret Agent in Kennedy's car, told Harold Weisberg in the 1970's that "I hope the day will come when these men (Kellerman and Greer) will be able to say what they've told their families".

William Greer died on 23rd February, 1985. His son, Richard Greer, was interviewed in 1991. When asked, "What did your father think of JFK," Richard did not respond the first time. When asked a second time, he responded: "Well, we're Methodists... and JFK was Catholic..."

  5. Once again, the lunatic fringe of the conspiracy community attempts to recast gossip, speculation, and tabloid-style reporting into some half-baked version of history bent on smearing a veteran Secret Service agent who had the unfortunate role of being the driver Kennedy's limousine in Dallas.

Did Anonymous not read the article above?

The fact that Anonynmous refuses to post his (or her) name says everything you need to know.

You can find the same kind of anonymous rubbish written in public washrooms nationwide. The postings above deserve an equal amount of attention.

For the record, there is not one word of truth in anything Anonymous has posted - a fact that can readily be determined by consulting any reputable source on the subject. Enough said.

    1. How can you possibly rebuke anonymous or any other conspiracy theorist after watching jfks assassination video. Are you seriously going to say there was no foul play. The car was traveling at such a slow rate of speed any concerned agent hired to protect the president reactions would have been immediately responsive after hearing the first shot. It was pretty obvious something was wrong, even the other man in the car was obviously injured. No one reacted at all until they shot him in the head, completely insane. The only logical conclusion to agents reaction time including the driver is that a silencer was used on the weapon, which according to witnesses and video is not the case. Case closed.

  6. Bill Greer worked for Henry Cabot Lodge, who hated the Kennedys and did everything he could to embarrass JFK and do things behind his back. Greer has an interesting history for a poor uneducated farm boy from Ireland who didnt even finish high school. How do you suppose that happened? He walks right into the US military then next thing you know he handles the Presidential food for FDR. A career Intelligence man moves like that.

    ReplyDelete
  7. So, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., and Lee Harvey Oswald are in cahoots to murder JFK using a former chauffeur as their co-conspirator? Now I've heard everything. Get real.

  8. Anonymous,

You are a moron. Unblemished versions of the Z film clearly show no gun in Greer's hand, not muzzle flash and no gun smoke.

No witness has ever stated or even intimated that they saw Greer with a gun.

No one riding in the car, has ever stated or intimated that they saw Greer with a gun, let alone shoot anyone.

This entire "conspiracy" is completely fabricated.

  9. I wouldn't believe anything Vincent "Helter Skelter" Bugliosi writes. Google Vincent Bugliosi+perjury.

Who in his right mind believes Oswald killed anyone?

However, Greer didn't kill Kennedy either---the "gun" is the top of the head of the other SS man.

The shooter has been confirmed....Also see Pt 7 in the series .....new tech. in film analysis has positively shown the shooter, dubed "badge man" , he can clearly be seen shooting a rifle with muzzle flash and wearing a police uniform with a badge. all this coming from the grassy knoll. The siclian mafia has a code of silence....but once he died others in custody in europe revealed his name.....This was actually aired once in U.S. on history channel......go to you tube for "The men who killed Kennedy" It's like 911, all the evidenice in the world online and elsewhere but your just not looking in the right place yet...Please do your own research....Knowledge is POWER

  12. Yes, knowledge is power and doing one's own research is essential. Having spent more than 35 years crawling through documents at the National Archives, Texas State Archives, Dallas police archives; interviewing eyewitnesses, law enforcement, and reporters in the Dallas area; performing my own geometric analysis of the shooting in Dealey Plaza using computer technology; and authoring the only book on the shooting of J.D. Tippit - among many other things - I can assure you that I have done my homework. And from my perspective there is nothing truthful about "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" series. May I suggest my report on the Badge Man image to begin your inquiry into the real story of the assassination.

  14. The 1964 Warren Commission established that Secret Service agents Forrest V. Sorrels, special agent in charge of the Dallas office, and Winston G. Lawson, a member of the White House detail who acted as the advance agent, selected the route. Dallas police officials agreed that the route selected was the proper one. It afforded wide streets most of the way, a chance to have alternative routes if something happened on the route, and was accessible to the largest amount of people. [Warren Report, pp.29, 31-32]

  19. Im finding it really hard to understand Why roy kellerman is always looking directly into the cameras around him for and not scanning the surrounding crowd. Why are cameras on his mind and not the presidents safety.. Did he know something was going to happen. He is suss to me... Very suss. A picture says a thousand words..

  21. So we all know that is not the only video of the assassination right? When two different videos show the gun.. Also, you can't add to a video! you can take footage away from the video so they can't see the gun! But you can't add a gun to the video.. Also tell me why the video that shows the gun is 4 seconds longer than the other.. The Zapruder film has been tampered with.. There was someone else with a camera that got it on tape and i have seen it.. Someone standing by the street sign got a better angle in black and white.. You should be Fired!! Although dale you have a convincing opinion, which i understand.. I think he let the president get shot thats why he stopped right next to the camera like that.. Greer Knew what was going to happen.. and i believe when the ss realised the president wasn't dead, the passenger of the car finnished the job.. The Govenor was focused on the president.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jason N., I don't know why this is still being discussed. It is so obvious that Mr. Greer did not "finish the job" as you say. And we both know that there is no second black & white film in existence that shows Mr. Greer shooting the President. I can't make it any clearer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Guys, what happened on that day was an absolute tragedy. We will never know who did it or why. I wonder what jfk would think about all of this, I suspect he would disapprove. Having said that, it is clear to me that the only person who survived and comes out of this looking good was Jackie. Everyone else has been smeared and accused of killing the president or failing in their duties.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous, Good points, though I disagree with the "We will never know who did it or why" comment. This is the big myth of the JFK assassination. The believable evidence has always (both then and now) shown Oswald's guilt in the shooting of the president. The "why" is a little obscure because of Oswald's death though not hard to guess given the wealth of information we know about his background and daily activities. The lack of believable evidence for a conspiracy involving Oswald (nearly fifty years after the fact) says all that has to be said about whether others were involved.

  25. Of course Greer wasn't the only shooter, but he certainly delivered a killing blow. His family was closely linked to the Lodges for many years, and the Lodges politically (and personally) hated the Kennedy's guts for GENERATIONS. In fact, H. C. Lodge Jr. himself (running for VP in '60) had just lost to JFK and Johnson. Greer also practically stopped the dang limo to perfectly get of his shot. Do the math!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why do some people insist on being stupid? Despite the fact that the original Z-film clearly shows that Greer doesn't have a gun in either hand (and no, the film hasn't been altered, dummy) and that Mrs. Kennedy felt so sorry for Greer that she requested that he drive the naval ambulance containing her husband's casket to the naval hospital hours after the assassination (even though Greer allegedly just shot her husband's head off at point blank range), we're expected to chuck reality and embrace this embarrassment-of-a-theory because the Greer family supposedly hated the Kennedy family by association?. Do the math? Apparently in Ed's world 2+2=313.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Welll. After watching the footage in very slow motion, I think Greer shot the JFK. And the reason is, there appears to be a shell casing fly from the driver side of the limo. If Greer had shot over his right shoulder, this would cause the casing to exit in that direction.....

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wake up, Anonymous. You're dreaming. High resolution digital copies of the original Zapruder film obtained from the National Archives (as opposed to highly inferior copies of dubious quality floating around the Internet) clearly and unquestionably refute the ridiculous allegation that Mr. Greer shot the president. Obviously, some people want to pretend that there is another reality in this instance. I'm not one of them.

    1. I don’t believe any of them SS Agents on the Kennedy detail, they covered it up starting with on the motorcade route doing nothing no reaction nothing! They were given Orders from LBJ who wanted JFK taken out! LBJ was the ringtail leader that day! I’m a believer in Greer delivered the fatal head shot! Then they (SS) began cover up during autopsy and destroying evidence! Altering JFK’s skull to make the lone theory gunman stick! Oswald was framed (Patsy)! There’s another theory that Jackie killed her husband as in Zapruda film after head shot as she’s climbing up on trunk she is seen dropping something behind JFK’s back between him and the seat. Her motive - fed up with all his extra marital affairs! Until I came across the Greer head shot! Makes more sense!

  33. It was well known in the 60's Greer fired the fatal head shot. It was known to everyone near the limo, it was known to Jackie Kennedy and it was known to SS agent Clint Hill........and it was known to researcher Fred Newcomb after interviewing a dozen witnesses. ReplyDelete
  37. Of course there are lots of possible scenarios as it pertains to the shooting but i don't believe greer took a shot. I have studied and researched the assassination for years and there is no doubt in my mind of a conspiracy. I even hold out the possibility that Oswald did hit the president with a shot. But whether he was the crazy assassin or an intelligence asset trying to infiltrate extreme groups, his movements and paper trail was obviously manipulated prior to and after the assassination. And of course he was quickly eliminated. I will not give my personal belief on the whos and why,etc..but just will again say that yes the murder of president Kennedy was planned by more than one person-meaning a conspiracy- but i don't think the videos show that greer took a shot.

  38. No one disputes that Greer slowed down at the time of the first two shots. Nor that he accelerated after the third and fatal shot. The Congressional committee on assassinations has concluded that Kennedy was "very likely" killed as a result of a conspiracy. Given Greer's behaviour it seems entirely reasonable to assume that he may have been part of that consipracy.

  39. The HSCA acoustic evidence supporting the "conspiracy" was destroyed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1982 and by my own photographic work in 2007; both of which can be read about here: EPIPOLAR GEOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF AMATEUR FILMS RELATED TO ACOUSTICS EVIDENCE IN THE JOHN F. The zfilm was altered, it shows the front of Kennedy's head exploding when the real explosion would have come from the back because the bullet entered the front.Greer definitely fired the final shot if you look at older versions that haven't been tampered with so much you can clearly see him raising his left arm, I know the new hi def versions would have you all believing it's the shadow and it's the Sun, that's because the film was locked up and tampered with. Why would they release that information? They took the video immediately after the shooting do you think they didn't alter it? Its hilarious how gullible some people are. There were more shooters, it was inside job, and Greer stopped the limousine made the final shot because it matches up perfectly with a gun in his hand and there are videos were his head actually goes backward and the brains come out the back of his head instead of a purple and pink mist at his forehead which makes no sense. Do some more research and open your eyes there weren't gunman scattered all over the place there were a couple in a select area that were supposed to get a head shot and they all failed. Greer finished the job

I believe Greer did an appalling job of reacting that day and Anonymous' summary of the feelings of the people who were there that day and felt Greer choked are accurate and not as you claimed "there is not one word of truth in anything Anonymous has posted".

Also, regardless of what you feel the facts are (or what name he chooses to go by) Anonymous actually wrote a more measured, better structured and professional sounding piece than yours.
